5th Annual Charles J. Thurmond Youth Scholarship Awards: Visual Arts CategoryEach spring, the Quinlan Visual Arts Center devotes all gallery spaces to the celebration of Youth Art Month, the visual arts category, for Gainesville and Hall County. We are fortunate to be teamed with the Kiwanis Club of Gainesville and the Charles J. Thurmond Youth Scholarship Awards again this year for another spectacular show! Grades 6-12 compete for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Honorable Mention distinctions in the categories of Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Writing showcases, awards were given at the Family Reception and Awards Announcement at the Quinlan on Sunday, March 30th. The judges for Youth Art Month 2008 were: Maureen C. Files, Quinlan Executive Director; Dr. Delores Diaz, Professor of Art Education and Art History at North Georgia College and State University; Dr. Jean Westmacott, retired Professor and Curator for Brenau University; and Dr. Philip Zoercher, retired ear nose and throat doctor and local potter. The first place winners in each grade will go on to compete in the State competition.
