Youth Art Month- Exhibition Tips

Exhibiting Artist- Professional Exhibition Etiquette

Here are some basic tips to exhibiting as a professional artist.

1.  ALWAYS try to give your artwork a title.
It may seem like an unnecessary (and optional) chore, but the judges do notice when your all of your pieces are "Untitled."  Giving your artwork a name is a final opportunity for you, the artist, to drive your message home. A single word or phrase is a statement if your commitment to your piece and takes the guesswork out of distinguishing between multiple "Untitled" entries from one artist.

2.  Complete all paperwork
It is a fact that all professional art competitions, Juried Shows, Art Auctions and Group Exhibitions, require the necessary drudgery of paperwork. Complete all required paperwork on time to guarantee your work will be eligible for judging.

3.  Label your artwork
Attaching your paperwork to your piece is fantastic, but also put a small label on the back with your name, grade and school in the event that the paperwork is removed, because at some point during the hainging process, it will be.  This way, those hanging your art will still know which way the piece is oriented (if it isn't obvious), who you are, where to find you and how to organize the art pick-up after the show closes.

4. Think About Hanging
Did you create a masterpiece? Make sure that all of your effort is justly rewarded. The words "ready to hang" need not be scary. Professional framing is not a requirement, but do give some thought as to how someone is actually going to get your work on to the wall. Pieces that are "wired" are the easiest to hang, but don't have too much faith in the strength of duct tape.  Practice hanging your piece with your chosen method overnight and see if it is still on the wall in the morning before committing. If it doesn't work, talk to your teacher and try something else.

5. Be Early!
Every minute counts, but if you are able, get your piece in earlier  the week it is due. This affords you the potential for your piece to be photographed for preliminary promotions for the exhibition in local newspapers and on the website.

6. Don't be afraid to ask questions
