Christmas on Green Street, 2009

 'Tis the Season

Image

The holiday season is off to a great start with the annual Christmas on Green Street Celebration on Sunday, December 6th.  Created by the Hall County Historical Society, Christmas on Green Street is an opportunity for the community to tour the homes on historic Green Street in downtown Gainesville and partake in some holiday cheer. Each year a classic car parade starts the evening at dusk, complete with Santa on a vintage fire truck. Performances by local groups, carolers and much more at each home on the tour. At the Quinlan this year, we had many treats to delight the children of our neighborhood. Free train rides (provided by the Hall County Historical Society) and free crafts for kids sponsored by the Georgia Art League. We entertained a record breaking 140 children this year at the Quinlan and I can show you the glitter, sequins and sparkles to prove it! High priestess of fun, Fox Gradin of Celestial Studios, helped us to create pine cone Christmas trees for each child.

Mitch Freeman to join “JUMBO” plan to save the Asian elephant

The Quinlan Visual Arts Center supports artist fundraising initiative to “Get Mitch to London!”

For one night only, Friday, November 20th from 6-8 PM, Quinlan artist Mitch Freeman will be showing his art work at the Quinlan Visual Arts Center, raising awareness (and patronage) for his goal to participate in Elephant Parade London, 2010.

Freeman is one of only 200 specially chosen international artists, a eclectic collection of creative talent, who will take part in what has been billed as London’s biggest outdoor art event on record. On view from May through July 2010, Elephant Parade London will see a herd of 200 fiberglass elephants descend on the parks, streets and squares of the capital. The unique sculptures will then be auctioned in the summer of 2010 by Sotheby’s, with all funds raised going towards conservation projects across Asia.

In the last one hundred years, Asian elephant populations have plummeted from 200,000 to circa 30,000 with 66% of those losses occurring in the last ten years. Elephant Parade London aims to channel funds into buying strategic habitat, which is the only real way to save this species from extinction. www.elephantfamily.org

For more information and details on how you can help “Get Mitch to London,” please see http://www.mitchfreemanart.com/ or attend the free charity event at the Quinlan Visual Arts Center on Friday, November 20th from 6-8 PM.
