JURORS STATEMENT:

It was with great humility that I accepted the invitation to be juror for the 2011 Quinlan Members Show.  As I walked the galleries I understandably had a hard time deciding which pieces would be my top choices.

So, what was I considering?

Any time I am considering art, I ask myself a series of questions:  Does this work have good form?  i.e., does it represent quality craftsmanship; a command of the medium. How is the use of color? Is there dimensionality?  Is there movement?  Is there light from within?  How is the composition?  Etc.  Does this work have good content? i.e. does it convey what it is trying to convey?  Is there something arresting about what I’m seeing? Is it asking me any questions?  Am I asking questions about it? Does it linger in my mind when I’ve walked away and am I drawn to return?  Etc.

I always take a quick walk through and decide which of the pieces are in my mind after I pass them.  I want to see which will show me something that I’ve not seen before, and also which will show me something that I’ve seen but perhaps in a new way.  Often, it comes down to, “This is really, really good!”

Each of the pieces that I selected for this year’s show exhibit fine examples of the qualities I hoped to see.  In fact, a large number of pieces exhibited these qualities and I walked through quite a few times narrowing and refining my selections.  I’m sure that there will be questions about “why would he choose that?” and yet, I hope that people will be able to see, “I can see that.”

The members of the Quinlan are to be congratulated on a superb 2011 show.  And I am grateful for the opportunity to have been your juror.
