Gene Coker

ImageArtist's Statement

Gene Coker feels that creative value in art should be made rather than found. The artist must take responsibility for who he is and reflect this by making his artistic expression a spirit of place.

You may view Gene Coker's website at www.genecokerwatercolors.com

Gene comes to watercolor painting after a career in Geology and he employs a philosophical and scientific approach to his painting process. The results of two procedures, preparation and presentation, are recorded in his sketch books and describe this process. Preparation involves drawing, design, value, color studies, composition and experimentation until a concept begins to fit with design. Presentation involves setting aside all preparation for entry into the "flow" zone of watercolor painting. During this, everything is subject to change and his paintings may either appear representative of place and/or abstract. This artist paints for the joy of it and appreciates those who share this with him.
