Still Life and Oil Painting with Robert Johnson
January 23 - 27, 2012. Monday - Friday 9 - 5
Cost: $650, ONE SPOT REMAINING
This workshop concentrates on capturing the natural beauty of the human
figure, floras and other still life subjects in oil while working
directly from life. The beauty and power of fresh undisturbed oil paint
as well as the expressive and descriptive quality of the brushstroke is
stressed. The instructor demonstrates and emphasizes the direct
alla-prima approach to oil painting. Robert Johnson was born in
Hopewell, Va. and has studied at the Art Students League of New York,
where he is a life member. Johnson is a signature member of the Oil

February 13 - 15, 2012 Monday - Wednesday 9- 4
Cost: $430
In this workshop we will focus
on drawing and painting the eyes, nose, mouth and ears. Using constructive and color anatomy, we will look
at the basic structure and color development of human features. This workshop is open to all levels.
In the morning, Marc will
demonstrate the exercises he does to strengthen his fundamentals of drawing,
value, color, and composition. The
afternoon will be dedicated to applying those principles while painting from live
model. The students will work from a live

Watercolor Secrets Revealed with Tom Lynch
Date: February 22 - 25, Cost: $400
The overall objective of the
workshop is to show the vast range and flexibility of watercolor and to put emotion
and conviction into painting by exploring, experimenting, and developing
creativity of each individual. Tom likes to put fun into the process of
painting, along with enthusiasm and new techniques in an atmosphere that makes
the intermediate and advanced painter feel welcome! A goal for each day is set,
and each student will see an example and understanding of that day’s lesson. There
will be daily demonstration paintings, with detailed explanations of all the “hows”
and “whys” followed by individual attention to see that each student
understands and has an example of the day’s objective. Included will be tips on
photography, “on-location” painting and matting. Also, Lynch’s ever popular program
on salvage techniques for discarded paintings during the critique session. Lynch
brings to his class the same enthusiasm and energy as seen on his (4) national
PBS series “Fun with Watercolor” that has been on PBS for the last 20 years.
His vast list of accomplishments, credits and awards are listed in “Who’s Who
in American Art”. He is a signature member of the Society of American
Impressionists and numerous watercolor societies. His work is featured in all
the leading art publications including the American Artist magazine, the
International Artist magazine, the Wall Street Journal, Artist Magazine,
Southwest Art and Art and Antiques. He has written seven books on watercolor
techniques. Among his many prestigious exhibits were a one-man show at the
American Embassy in Paris
and as the featured artist for four U.S. Open Golf tournaments, and numerous
PGAevents. You will come away from this workshop with enthusiasm for watercolor
painting, some new techniques, a new friend and knowledge that you can use for

March 14 - 18, $600
Brian Davis will demonstrate the approach to painting in oils that has made his
floral paintings renowned. In addition to his oil painting technique, he will
talk about choosing
a subject, composition and the importance of a value painting, called a
"grisaille," which he uses as an under painting for his works . You will watch
Brian as he goes through the process of bringing a painting to life. You will
also work on your painting. He will be there to answer questions and assist you
with the creation of your masterpiece. The first day or two will focus on the
grisaille and the remainder of the workshop will deal with the application of
color. Additionally, he will be happy to answer questions that deal with the

Donna Thomas, Palette Knife Workshop
March 17 & 18, $300

The
use of a limited palette in color mixing for color balance and harmony will be
discussed, as well as a review of compositional elements, tangents and the
importance of value. Color palettes may range from bold colors to more
sophisticated neutrals depending on personal taste. Still life studies will
provide a subject source and can favorite florals, personal
objects. Students may also paint from personal photographs as
a subject source.
Short Biography:
Originally from Savannah,
Georgia, Donna attended the School of Fine Arts
at the University
of Georgia. She
continued her postgraduate studies with a number of nationally known artists
primarily in landscape design and palette knife technique. She considers
herself cross-disciplined and utilizes a variety of mediums in her work
including oil, tempera, encaustic (wax), and photography. More recently,
she has concentrated on palette knife technique and mixed media.
As owner of The Art School in Sandy Springs

Donna instructs on the intermediate/advanced levels and has also taught
at Binders Art
School in Atlanta
and The Bascom in Highlands, NC. She has
performed palette knife demonstrations in a number of galleries in Atlanta.
Donna co-authored a 'how to' book, "A
Studio Guide to Creating Encaustic Art", which outlines a simple guide
on the process of working with the encaustic medium in painting, photography
and mixed media which is available on Amazon.com.
In the past, the artist has enjoyed a very
successful career in equine portraiture.
Currently exhibiting in Atlanta
at David's Gallery and The Art House Atlanta and in Clayton, GA
at Butler II. Past exhibits include Anne Irwin Fine Art. A solo
exhibit of twenty (20) large works will be held in September 2011 of her mixed
media tonal studies.

For the
most efficient use of time and in order to disseminate as much information as
possible, we will be utilizing the benefits from both the outdoors and also
from being in the classroom. Instruction will include lecture and slide
presentation, instructor demonstrations, class critiques, and plenty of one-on-one
time with each student. The principles taught in the class apply
universally to painting the landscape in a variety of mediums. All
students are welcomed, though we will be using non petrol based paints for the
week. A field easel is required, as the class will be painting on
location much of the time.

John’s

Gregg Kreutz Workshop, April 19 - 21, $600 (+$30 model fee)
An award winning painter and author of the classic artist’s
guide; Problem Solving for Oil Painters (now in it’s twentieth year of
publication), Gregg Kreutz has been drawing and painting all his life. After
graduating from N.Y.U., he pursued his training as a painter in earnest at the
Art Student’s League of New York winning a merit scholarship. He studied with
Frank Mason, Robert Beverly Hale, and, most significantly, David A. Leffel.
After his training at the League, he signed up for the Washington Square
Outdoor Art Show where we won best in show and from there was able to get in
galleries and become a full time painter. He has won numerous awards including
the Frank C. Wright Award, the Hudson Valley Art Association Award, 1986, the
Medal of Merit (first prize in oils), Knickerbocker Artists; the Council of
American Artists Awards, Salmagundi Club; the Grumbacher Award, Knickerbocker
Artists; Most recently he won the Merit Award at the 2005 National Portrait
Society of America.
He has had one man shows at Grand Central Galleries, The Fanny Garver Gallery,
the Newport Art Association, and the Hilligoss Gallery in Chicago. He is currently represented by
Trailside Galleries, Quidley & Company, Hilligoss Gallery, Eleanor Ettinger
Gallery in New York, Fanny Garver Gallery in Madison, and The Wendt Gallery in Laguna Beach, California.
He teaches painting and drawing at the Art Student’s League in
New York City as well as at The Fechin Institute
in New Mexico,
The Scottsdale Artist’s School, The California Art Institute, and other
workshops throughout the country. His videos are popular learning tools used by
artists all over the world.

3 Day Figure Drawing
Intensive Workshop with Coulter Prehm.

For centuries the human form has been used by artists to convey emotion,
tell stories, record moments and people in time and study the art of
drawing. The focus of this exciting 3
day workshop will be centered on learning a step by step method for creating a
figure drawing. Students will learn how
to interpret the interaction between light and form and articulate what they
are experiencing visually through drawing.
Focus will be given to composition, understanding of the function of
light, technical aspects of creating a drawing, materials and human
anatomy. During the 3 day, long pose,
students will have ample time to create a beautiful figure drawing and will

Daily Schedule:
Wed,
April 25th: Meet at the Quinlan. I will do a quick demo and we'll discuss
plein air and pre mix some colors for the next day. We'll also do a
landscape painting from a photo. Participants can bring a
photo, or paint from one of mine. I'll also set up some still lifes
that participants can paint from.
Thurs,
April 26th: Weather permitting, we'll meet at Longwood
Park, 20 Pearl Nix Pkwy, Gainsville,
GA 30501,
which is just a few minutes from the Quinlan, and on Lake Lanier.
Meet at the Gazebo down at the left end of the park if you were facing it from
the street.
Friday,
April 27th: The class will vote on Thurs. whether to paint plein air or in the
studio. If the weather didn't permit plein air painting on Thurs, we'll
definitely do it on Friday.
Self Portraiture and the Human Face
with Daryl Urig (Open Media Exploration)
May 2 - May 4, Cost: $400, 9:30 - 3:30 (hr. break for lunch)
Rembrandt painted self-portraits throughout his life, creating subtle
masterpieces that really seem to capture who he was, as did many Old Master
Painters who followed this process. Some drew, other painted, used print techniques,
others combined a number of mediums to personally explore their deeper spirit.
Nationally Acclaimed oil painter
Daryl Urig will provide a unique presentation of rich Instruction on the
benefits of self-portraiture and describing the human facial features using
three different and complimentary approaches. These will benefit the artist in
developing a more in-depth portrait. Students will develop preliminary studies
and a final self-portrait based on demonstrations, artistic self-exploration and
inspiring instruction.
During this exploration of self-portraiture we will take a
closer look at our self and our work and the things that help communicate who
we are. What approach will we choose to develop this likeness? Will we use a
pencil, brush or a paint knife? All
mediums welcome. Demonstrations will be in sketching and painting.
Daryl Urig is an
adjunct Professor with the University of Cincinnati for over 10 years and
created a 4-year program for the University of Cincinnati as its Academic
Coordinator. He has painted all through his career while his work has hung in
the Columbus Art Museum and the Toledo Art Museum. He has won major awards all
across the United states including the Salmagundi Club in New York City. He is
represented by many galleries in the United States including the prestigious
Hilligoss Galleries of Chicago Illinois, on the Magnificent Mile. He has won
awards with the Portrait Society of America and is the premier painter for the
Indian Hill Historic Society in Indian Hill, Ohio. His Blog “The Adventures of
an American Oil Painter is read by more than 50,000 viewers annually. His
unique painting understanding and ability to teach makes him a worthwhile
resource for entry level to professional artist.

Plein Air: Developing a strong foundation with Brett Weaver
May 17 - 19, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM, Cost: $375
This is a three day intensive workshop which will be held primarily
outdoors. This course is perfect for the beginner as well as intermediate
student, and is open to all levels.
Primary focus of the workshop will be on developing strong compositions
and the importance of value, and color harmony and understanding your palette.
We will focus on learning to see and paint shapes, color and value rather than
specific objects. We will discuss the necessary tools and approach required for
plein air painting. Use of the proper tools, preliminary study and strong
composition are essential to achieving a successful painting. Brett will be demonstrating on location at
least two of the three days and then work one on one with each student to
discuss personal development and goals.
Discussion will also include techniques for enhancing and touching up
paintings back in the studio. This
course is designed to help the student build confidence and a stronger

Quinlan Workshop Policies and Payment Procedures
A workshop is a unique opportunity to study with a modern master, a professional artist that is sharing their expertise with devoted students. All skill levels are welcome to attend, however, it is assumed that the students enrolled in a course at this level will have a basic understanding of the rudiments of the medium. There are between 20 and 30 students enrolled in each workshop and one teacher. There is plenty of room and ample opportunity for individual instruction if you are adequately prepared.

space in one of our workshops (see below).

Deposits
A non-refundable deposit of one-half of the
enrollment fee is required at the time of registration. Deposits are

Balance
The balance is due one (1) month prior to the workshop
start date. Reminder notices will be sent to students at the time payment is

Deposits are non-refundable. Deposits may be
transferred to another workshop if intent to withdraw is made at least
forty-five (45) days prior to the class start date. (A $15 transfer fee will
apply.) Deposits may be transferred one time only and MUST be redeemed
within a year of original deposit date. There is NO refund, nor
transfer, for any reason, if you cancel 45 days or less before the workshop. We
understand that last minute emergencies, illnesses, or conflicts come up that
can't be controlled, and we are truly sorry, but due to committed expenses on
the part of the Quinlan Visual Arts
Center, we are not able to
make exceptions.
Other suggestions to insure your workshop experience is a positive one:
Please provide the following, as necessary: Lights and extension cords, easels, still life objects including but not limited to pottery, fabric drapes, fruit and other objects d'art. The Quinlan has a limited number of these items. Arrangements to borrow lights and easels may be made in advance by out of town participants only on a first come first served basis. Supply lists will be sent and are posted for your convenience on this website, please try to come prepared.
For fine art supplies, we recommend Pen Dragon Fine Art Supply , located on studio level at the Quinlan Visual Arts Center and Binders Art and Frame located in Atlanta.
Limited supplies can be purchased in Gainesville at the local Walmart, Office Depot, Office Max, Michael's and JoAnn's. Please see Quinlan staff for more details.
At the end of the workshop week. Please be sure to dispose of all personal items and perishable still life items, such as fruit and flowers in the waste receptacles provided in the studio.
