A fun and light-hearted two days to recharge your batteries! Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned artist, join us for two exciting days of skill building in watercolor. We'll start with the basics and then dive into color usage and pinpoint specifically how each individual can improve short term and long term – as an artist. Bring a few examples of your work for a private consultation with Jim. Workshop includes demos by Jim and painting time for students, as well as daily critiques. A Georgia-based artist, Jim's artwork has been showcased in International Artist, The Artist Magazine and Watercolor Magic magazines. He has taught painting in Italy for the University of Georgia's Studies Abroad program, as well as having served as an adjunct instructor for Brenau University's Art & Design department in Gainesville, Ga. He is currently pursuing an MFA degree in studio art at Georgia State University in Atlanta.
The exciting and often challenging medium of watercolor will be explored in this workshop with an emphasis on sound art fundamentals. Students will learn how to control watercolor, which is commonly thought to be elusive with a mind of its own. Whatever skill level you are at, you will see your work grow as you discover new directions in color and composition. Through demonstrations, lecture and individual critique you will experience a different approach to this provocative medium. Click here for workshop outline. Click here for material list.

Throughout his career, Marc has been an instructor.
He started teaching as an assistant to Roman and Constantin and
gradually took over the classes in 1984. Still devoted to his students,
Marc regularly conducts classes and workshops. Marc states that his
first love is color and would consider himself more of a colorist than
a tonalist. He believes in a strong knowledge of drawing and anatomy
and practices them diligently. Marc begins his work by drawing with
paint. He prefers to paint alla prima because it keeps a spontaneous
approach to his subject. Nonetheless, his finished works carry great
detail. Working from darks to lights, he develops texture and color
using a weaving technique of brushstrokes and utilizes texture to
enhance the feeling of light striking the subject. "Color is paramount
to me as I develop the painting as a whole."
"To me, painting hooks me into a greater source and
connects me to the creative force. I’ve always felt it’s like dancing
on the eye lashes of God." And with love and admiration in his eyes
Marc quotes his father; like Roman always said, "in art, first one
becomes a master, then an artist, and finally, a student."
This
workshop concentrates on capturing the natural beauty of the human figure,
floras and other still life subjects in oil while working directly from life.
The beauty and power of fresh undisturbed oil paint as well as the expressive
and descriptive quality of the brushstroke is stressed. The instructor
demonstrates and emphasizes the direct alla-prima approach to oil painting. Schedule:
9am-4pm, daily.

In this class, students will learn to paint the portrait and
still-life using the chiaroscuro approach of the Dutch and Flemish masters.
Particular attention will be paid to light and shadow, as well as the use of
value, color, edges and brushstroke in creating a painting with a visual
concept.
Michael Siegel's deep interest in fine art dates back to his early childhood, and it was at the age of 14 that he took his first serious steps towards becoming a professional artist.
He studied figure drawing and portraiture in Milwaukee and Los Angeles under such luminaries as James Prohl and Glenn Vilppu. The pivotal moment in his studies came in 1998, when at the age of 18 he attended a painting seminar taught by Gregg Kreutz of the New York Art Students' League, who introduced him to the chiaroscuro style of the old Dutch Masters. Michael then moved to Taos, NM where he studied under the private tutelage of David Leffel, also formerly of the Art Student's League in NY, who is considered by many as a "20th Century Old Master."
Mr. Siegel's works have been collected throughout the world. At 30 years of age, Michael teaches painting classes and workshops around the country, has been featured numerous times in Southwest Art Magazine, and has received honors in such shows as the ARC Salon Competition, Greenhouse Gallery's Salon International, and the Artists' Magazine's International Art Competition. "I
would like to introduce you to an artist I am very impressed with. His
art caught my eye at an exhibition and I knew I wanted to learn more
about him. I have been an artist for over fifty years with exhibitions
in the US and Europe, and have been an instructor for twenty-one years
with an evening class at Emory University in Atlanta. This does add up
to knowledge of what good quality art is all about. I did meet this
artist and his name is Jon Houglum. When you look at his painting of
landscapes, they turn the eyes back to the eighteenth century when
every brush stroke made a statement to the viewer. In his paintings,
you see and feel moved by the moment. All my art history from college
came rushing back with exhilaration and respect. This is an artist, Jon
Houglum, whose work you must see to realize what I speak of. “
