Next Art League Meeting:
From President Cheryl Hardin:
The
Georgia Art League will next meet at Peach State Bank July 15 due to the
Children's Summer Programs at the Quinlan.
It's
time to start thinking about new officers to fill
the positions for The Georgia Art League 2011 year. If you have any interest in
serving as President or Exhibitions Chair, please contact Cheryl Hardin. We have reorganized the positions so that
each Chair is responsible for only a very defined amount of work. The President will preside over meetings and
send out emails to the membership. The Exhibitions Chair will coordinate
exhibitions and exhibit hanging (along with volunteers) and take in submissions
at each show.
On
Saturday, September 18, the 7th Annual Art in the Square Festival will be held
on the Square in downtown Gainesville. We're going to have a booth for The
Georgia Art League. The size of the booth and the cost to the artists depends on
how many artists sign up. A 10x10 booth is $60; a 10x20 booth is $120. For
example, if 10 artists sign up, we will reserve a 10x20 booth and the cost will
be $12 per artist. If you are interested in having space in the GAL booth at Art
in the Square, contact Anne Brodie Hill at

WINNERS
OF THE SUMMER GAL EXHIBITION:
Our
Summer Exhibition was judged by Jim Chapman, well-known watercolorist, teacher,
and humorist. Jim did an exceptional and thoughtful examination of the works -
and shared his comments with me. Please take time to visit the 3rd floor Gallery
at Peach State Bank to see this wonderful exhibition.
Honorable
Mention: Alyce Black, Pears. Jim's
Comments: "I love how the colors in the
pears weave into the background, making the background as interesting as the
pears themselves. Nice choice of colors. Good work."
Honorable
Mention: Robin Smith, Blue Birds and
Roses. Jim's
Comments: "Aside from its technical excellence, the piece achieves a warmth and
homespun feel without being hokey. The rolling glazes on the tree trunk, and the
excellent woodgrain pattern bring an expressive feel to this piece that is
good."
Honorable
Mention: Debra Yaun, Peaceful Pastures. Jim's
Comments: "A masterful handling of the medium. A lot of detail without seeming
tiring. The emphasis of the light on the tree on the right is delightful. Nice
work."
Honorable
Mention: Patti Russell, Red
Rose. Jim's
Comments: "Nice composition, good balance of red vs. green. More importantly,
the frailty and glory of the flower here is at once revealed, like a child might
hold it up to show its wonder. The delicate shift from cool rose red to warm red
is very nice. Good lost edges on flower sections, too."
Third
Place: Dolly Alexander, Colorful
Pond. Jim's
Comments: "A haunting sense of silence echoes through this piece, yet it's not
vacant. It gives the sense of the seconds before a storm, that stillness that
will not last. This piece effectively evokes that moment."
Second
Place: Cheryl Hardin,
Sisters. Jim's
Comments: "Has a shimmering quality that is enhanced by the mirror effect,
further compounded by the uncertainty and mystery of the work."
First
Place: Sandi Landergott, Peach Gazebo. Jim's
Comments: "A beautiful impression that compells the viewer to linger, through
its use of warm and color groupings. It also gives a promise of things unseen,
which is a powerful attraction. Very nice."
Congratulations
to all for a beautiful Summer Exhibition!
Our July
15 program at Peach State Bank will be presented by noted artist Amanda Carder,
whose style is realism with an appreciation of impressionism. She has a
fascination with light, reflection, and movement whether she is painting a
landscape, still life, or portrait. Check out Amanda's work at
www.amandacarder.com. Amanda will be doing a demonstration of her unique style
of oil painting. You don't want to miss this meeting!
The June
17 program was presented by Carmen
Stolorena on "How to Go From Being a Blocked Artist to a Prolific Artist" -
something most of us have struggled with at one time or another. Carmen's
program was enlightening to all of us - and we left with some real tools to help
us on our journey to create fine art.
That's
all for now. Now turn off the computer and get back to your easels, your
cameras, your potter's wheel, etc. - and get creative!!! Good art to all!
