Donna Thomas Workshop

THE RUB OUT
November 19
1 Sat 10 AM - 4:30 PM
ALL SKILL LEVELS
$175
The creation of an image by removing, rather than adding marks - a strategy famously described by Jasper Johns as "additive subtraction" - attests to the power of absence when specifically associated with a former state. Most painters work in the positive, using additive techniques (building up layers of marks, paint, or materials) by adding one shape on top of another.
This technique, similar to the Renaissance's Chiaroscuro utilized by Leonardo Da Vinci, uses tones, shades, shadows and highlights to create the illusion of three dimensions on two dimensional media. Chiaroscuro comes from the Italian words for bright or clear and dark or obscure. It is usually translated as 'light-dark'.
During this workshop students will learn to create art works that have dramatic lighting, high contrast and volume using a monochromatic palette. Other techniques such as "drips", washes, and toweling will be taught. This technique can be used as a tonal study before applying local color and is an easy and fun way to draw with paint.

Donna Thomas Bio.

"Creating art is a personal, emotional and exciting journey and painting for oneself is the essence of true creativity."
Originally from Savannah, Georgia, Donna attended the School of Fine Arts at the University of Georgia in the early 70’s. Taking an early departure from this program to study physical therapy, she returned to oil painting in the mid 80’s and studied under the direction of numerous local and nationally known artists. Enjoying earlier success in the equestrian arts, the artist’s work has ranged from contemporary realism, abstract expressionism to tonal work. Her current series using a limited montone palette is based on personal aspects of her life.
Having owned two galleries in Atlanta, one which specifically held national juried exhibitions, has afforded the artist exposure to many types of work, genres, and mediums, as well as, exceptional artists in their medium.
