Beginning Drawing: Wildlife, Animals, Nature's Elements with Alan Young (Pen and Ink)
(2) Saturdays:10:15 AM - 4 PM
Feb. 8 & 15
A variety of techniques and principles are explored in this drawing class designed for beginners. It goes beyond basic sketching and will delve in to the world of realism. Students will have their choice of material for their final project, which includes subject matters they bring to class. Any dense and/or multi-texture elements, such as seashells, family pets or trees are perfectly acceptable. Students are asked that all reference work brought to class be in hard copy (no computer/tablet screens) and it is recommended that they are at least 8 ½ x 11in in size. From this, students will have a better understanding of anatomy and facial perspective.
Stage one begins with a basic elemental outline. This is followed by using pen and ink for contrast, detail and texture.
Stage Two adds value scales as it relates to light principles. This will be the primary focus of the remainder of the class. All the aspects of lighting, highlighting, shadowing, and shading are dissected and practiced. These universal principles can be transferred to other media. Later, students have the option at trying their hand at an “absolute” negative, white or light subject matter against a solid black background. This extreme yet simple illustration further demonstrates the beauty of light play and light sourcing.
