YOUTH ART MONTH -
15TH ANNUAL CHARLES J. THURMOND SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
Exhibition Dates: March 16 - April 7, 2018
Reception & Awards Ceremony, Friday, March 16th, 5:30 - 7 PM
Youth Art Month is a nationally celebrated event. Festivities take place traditionally each March, to celebrate visual arts for grades K – 12. The Youth Art Month Program emphasizes the value of art education for all children, encourages support for quality school art programs, and promotes art material safety.
Youth Art Month also provides a forum for recognizing skills developed through visual arts experiences that are not possible in other curriculum subjects.
Over the last eleven years, Youth Art Month in Gainesville has been particularly important because of the legacy of Charles J. Thurmond and the Kiwanis Club of Gainesville.
Thurmond was a member of the Georgia Legislature, the Gainesville City Council and served in many other capacities including as a Trustee of and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Brenau University – the Thurmond-McRae Lecture Hall is named in his honor. He served as a Kiwanian for over 60 years. During that time he served as President, Lieutenant Governor and Governor of the Georgia District. A great Kiwanian and Gainesvillian, Charles J. Thurmond… created a way to “improve the world one child at a time, one community at a time….”
The Kiwanis Club of Gainesville through the Charles J. Thurmond Youth Art Scholarship Awards has provided college scholarships totaling $195,000 in total scholarships. $65,000 of that is to the visual art students.
Awards were made recognizing excellence in the following categories:
• Visual arts
• Performing arts
• Writing
The Best in show prize in each category is $2500 each year. First place winners from each grade also have the opportunity to compete at the State Youth Art Month competition where more cash awards are possible.
Kiwanis partners with the Quinlan Visual Arts Center each year in order to showcase the visual arts component of the competition in a professional gallery setting. The Quinlan donates the gallery space each spring exclusively for the display of youth art entries from grades K-12. Exhibition Dates: March 16 – April 7th. Opening reception and awards ceremony will be held at the Quinlan Friday, March 16th, 5:30 – 7:00 P.M.
Eligibility- Entries each year are accepted through the art department of local schools. All local Gainesville and Hall County elementary, middle and high schools will be invited to submit their best artwork. Ribbons are awarded, cash awards from the scholarship competition for grades 10-12.
