In Mermoriam of Bob White
The Quinlan mourns the loss of Bob White, a wonderful artist who dedicated much of his life to honing his skill, helping develop those of his contemporaries and championing the mission of the Quinlan. We send our heartfelt condolences to his family and all those close to him. May Bob's soul rest in eternal peace.

Robert Marvin White, known to friends and family as Bob, passed away June 22nd 2023 in Gainesville GA at the age of 90.
Bob was the son of George E. and Olive White of Summit NJ. He attended Summit High School, after having spent his early years in Montreal and Toronto Canada, where he had his fondest childhood memories.
Bob graduated from Rutgers University with a BS in Agriculture, and the University of Texas where he received his MBA. Bob served in the US Air Force in the US Air Cadet Program.
Bob’s met his wife of 64 years, Mona, working at the flagship Neiman Marcus in Dallas Texas. They married in 1959 and had two children, a son William, and a daughter Laura (known professionally as Welker White).
Bob moved into advertising, rising through the ranks at the internationally renowned ad agency Ogilvy and Mather, retiring as senior Vice President and Marketing Director prior to retirement at age 55.
The latter part of Bob’s life was devoted to his pursuit of painting. After studying in New York City at the Arts Students League and Silvermine Guild in Connecticut, Bob and Mona retired to Gainesville, GA in 1994. Bob quickly established an artistic home at the Quinlan Art Center, and was a founding member of the “Blue Angels”- an art collective and gallery where he painted up until his death.
As well as the Quinlan, Bob’s work has been shown at The Richard Gertz Gallery in Highlands, North Carolina, and at The Atlanta Artists Center Gallery. Bob's work is in the permanent collection at Brenau University as well as in private and corporate collections. Bob was honored with the 2006 Dianne Reddy Memorial Award for oils at the Salmagundi Club in New York.
Alongside his wife and his children, Bob is survived by his four grandchildren: Sabina, Sarah, Henry and Juliet, as well as his daughter-in-law Donna White and son-in-law Damian Young, and niece and nephew Frieda and John Carone.

Something to Declare Exhibition
Something to Declare is a group exhibition featuring over twenty Latin-American artists from across the eastern United States. The exhibition aims to discuss and analyze some of the conditions and circumstances relevant to the artists’ individual autonomy, what drives them to create, and their desire to proclaim in a collective setting that, “we are here.” This exhibition also explores the concept that ideas, customs, and objects can travel between cultures, and identities are often layered.

Opening Reception, Thursday, October 11, 5:30 - 7:30 PM
Awards Ceremony 6:15 PM
The most popular tradition in the history of the Quinlan, the 71st Annual Members' Exhibition showcases the work of the myriad of member-artists from Gainesville and surrounding North Georgia Communities, Atlanta and the Southeast. Each year of celebration marks yet another season of unparalleled excellence in visual arts programming and celebrates the artists that contribute to that level of excellence. The exhibition will be on view through November 24th and is a dazzling and eclectic array of art in all media including landscapes, abstracts, still life compositions, portraits, ceramics, wood turnings and much, much more.
The opening reception will be Thursday, October 11th from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Juror Christopher Dant, Assistant Professor of Photography at the University of North Georgia will award ribbons for Best of Show, First, Second, and Third places as well as several Honorable Mentions.
Chris Dant (b. Columbus, OH) is a visual artist who explores the ideas of empathy, shared experience, family history and loss through the use of the photographic medium. Chris received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Texas in 2012 and his Master in Fine Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame in 2016. In 2015, he was commissioned by the South Bend Museum of Art to travel around the state of Indiana and photographically document the still existing projects constructed by the Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.) in the 1930s and 40s. This work was recently added to the South Bend Museum of Art’s Permanent Collection. In addition, Dant has recently exhibited his work in New York City and received the Walter R. Beardsley Award for Best in Show, for his MFA Thesis Exhibition, Worthy Sons, from the Snite Museum of Art in Notre Dame, Indiana. After graduate school, Chris found his way back to the University of North Texas, where he held an adjunct position teaching the Advanced Darkroom course. In the Spring of 2017, he accepted the position of Assistant Professor of Photography at the University of North Georgia, in Dahlonega, Georgia, where he currently resides. You can find Chris hiking around the mountains of north Georgia, making photographs and looking for rocks to climb and a good watering hole to swim in.

Dain-TEA Fundraising Event for our Healing Through the Arts Program & Re-Hatched Artist Market Event
Through the seed money we received from the Northeast Georgia Community Foundation, we initiated a Healing through Arts Program with patients with dementia or mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease. This program concept based, in part, on the successful “Arts 4 Alzheimer’s” program in Atlanta. We have been able to raise additional funds to keep the program going at the Guest House for the remainder of the year and possibly longer. We had a successful fundraising event in partnership with a student at SCAD University as part of a thesis project, we have raffled art items, and quite unexpectedly, many of the instructors have donated their payments back to the program to keep it going. We have achieved the ongoing goal for outreach programs, constantly evolving to expand sustainable art enrichment opportunities for under served members of the community.

Healing Through the Arts receives grant funding through Cargill Community Cares
Healing through the Arts is an on-going art program for the benefit of the Northeast Georgia Community through the Quinlan Visual Arts Center. More than simply an art class, it is a valuable life enrichment opportunity. Over the past three years the Quinlan has successfully expanded community outreach in the arts to provide for underserved members of the community but until recently, many of the programs have been limited to opportunities for children. In 2014, the Quinlan began making services to senior citizens a priority.
The Quinlan has partnered with The Guest House, a Health Care and Activities Center for seniors who need day-time care and company, with the first set of classes. Specially trained artists and art educators Fox Gradin, Mary Frances Hull, Joe Emery, Anne Brodie Hill, Patricia Fabian, Marsha Richter and Jill Dodelin have been teaching portable art classes with meaningful activities that provide support, stimulation and social interaction. Based upon other successful area outreach programs each class will result in a finished project. Projects include painting, sculpture, ceramics, book making, mosaics and more. Cargill Community Cares recently awarded $2,000 in grant funds to allow us to continue programming for 2017. |

Installation of Bus Shelter Art in City of Gainesville August 2016
|
The City of Gainesville, in partnership with Vision 2030, has selected 15 pieces of art to install on bus shelters in the City of Gainesville. Art was selected in order to introduce artistic works which build on the Gainesville Connection brand of connecting people to family, friends, recreation, business, government, education, retail, nonprofits and places of importance. Thematically and visually, works are focused on the connectivity of people to the community. There were 81 entries in total and from that a panel from the Vision 2030 Public Art Committee selected 15. The panelists were Meg Nivens, Jack Burd, Jessica Tullar and Phillippa Lewis Moss. The art application and entry process was facilitated by the Quinlan Visual Arts Center and Executive Director Amanda K. McClure. The following artists were selected to have their work displayed in area shelters: Juanivir Acosta, Jason Bohannon, Helene Gardelle, Anne Brodie Hill, Travis Massey, Erica McCullough, Frank Norton Jr., Victoria Webb, Larry Griffeth, Edgar Esquivel, and Penny K. Stowe. The artwork will be installed in August 2016. Contact: Phillippa Lewis Moss, 770-503-3340 or [email protected] |
FREE RANGE ART PROJECT AT PANAMERICAN GAMES
The ongoing Free Range Art Project, a partnership between Vision 2030 and the North Georgia Community Foundation promotes art within the community through the creation of large scale (8’x8’) works of art installed in the public sphere throughout the City of Gainesville and Hall County.
The 2016 Free Range Art selections have just been announced for the following artists:
The new selections will be placed temporarily at the Lake Lanier Olympic Park for the 2016 Pan American Championships this May (with the youth entry “Peace” to be housed there permanently). The park will serve as host site for the championships which are the Continental Olympic Qualifier for the Americas for the upcoming Olympics in Rio. The works will then be placed at their final destinations (to be determined) in the Gainesville/Hall County area.
Vision 2030, sponsored by the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce, is a community project to provide a common vision for what Gainesville and Hall County would look like in the year 2030. Since great communities have great art, the Public Art Committee was formed to create opportunities for artists in conjunction with the growth of the community. March is Youth Art Month at the Quinlan
Young artists' work shines at Quinlan Visual Arts Center Gallery to display and judge pieces for annual Visual Arts Showcase

Youth Art Month and Visual Arts Showcase reception
When: Opening reception 5:30-7 p.m. March 18
Where: Quinlan Visual Arts Center, 514 Green St. NE, Gainesville
Cost: Free
Students with an artistic prowess and desire to pursue a college education have a shot at earning scholarship money through the Visual Arts Showcase.
Sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Gainesville, the annual contest will begin with an opening reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. March 18 at Quinlan Visual Arts Center in Gainesville. At the free event, students will be recognized for their work and a few will be selected to receive money for their college education.
“We give nine scholarships out per year. We have given 85 out to date, which is almost $200,000 worth of scholarships,” said Kelly Lee, the Visual Arts Chair of the Kiwanis Club of Gainesville. “We give away scholarships to kids to go to any college that they choose.”
The winners of the contest receive up to $2,500 for first place, $1,500 for second and $1,000 for third place.
“It’s a good scholarship and it’s a good amount to help go toward college education,” Lee said.
But the money is not the only perk. Winners advance to a statewide competition.
“(They) have the opportunity to compete on the state level with the state Kiwanis board where they have the same competition to get additional college money,” Lee said.
The contest is held in conjunction with the Quinlan, which sponsors Youth Art Month. Quinlan displays the students’ artwork at the gallery in Gainesville for a month and host the competition, Lee said.
“The Quinlan has been a partner with us pretty much from the beginning,” Lee said. “They find the judges and have a reception for the students. They have the judging actually go for a much wider variety of ages than the actually scholarship program goes toward just to encourage the artists in our school systems to pursue their talents.”
The Kiwanis Club, however, is the main sponsor since its mission is to help children of the world.
“When we were trying to think of ways we could help the children, a scholarship program was thought of, especially when we lost one of our longtime members, Charles Thurmond,” Lee said. “He loved high school students, he loved education and he was kind of our entertainer for this club. He was always up front leading songs and stuff like that, so we thought this was a fitting way to remember him and partner our mission with remembering somebody who was such a big part of our club for many years.”

Quinlan Gala shares works while funding Gainesville center
A hundred pieces of fine art found new homes after a night of community members bidding and outbidding each other. The silent and live auction, also known as the 38th annual Gala Art Auction, acts as the Quinlan Visual Arts Center’s one and only fundraiser for the year.
“It’s our signature event,” Amanda McClure, executive director of the center, said. “It showcases what we do best. ... Art is our business here, and we have a reputation of excellence.”
The Willis Investment Counsel company is one of this year’s sponsors. Funds from the event will go toward the Quinlan’s goal of “bringing visual arts to life, and to the life of the community,” according to their website, www.qvac.org.
The center offers special programs for each level of artist from beginner to advanced. There are classes on everything from watercolor techniques to still life painting, and a Friday sketch club offered every week.
“We’re honored to present this event every year, because it’s popular with the community,” McClure said. “I believe that there are people outside our community (who) are starting to come in and say ‘Hey there’s this really neat art event in Gainesville.’ Sometimes the outside world when they come in are really surprised to see an art center of this caliber serving this area. It’s nice that we have these wow moments with visitors and new guests.”
Exhibitions are also part of the center’s offerings, and the auction is one of them. “The event is our first major exhibition every year,” McClure said in a previous interview with The Times. “We rotate our exhibitions every seven to nine weeks and have something different every year.” Artwork came in from all over the nation to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. Some of the works were created by local artists, while regional and national artists also sold off their pieces. The work of artists like Junko Ono Rothwell, David Wendel and Mary Frances Hull were up for sale.
“We have a wide variety of art — everything from traditional, still life and landscape to abstract, mixed media and other kinds,” McClure said. Touted as an “event that is not to be missed for serious art collectors,” the gala has sold out in years’ past and this year was no exception. The event caps out at 100 couples, or 200 individuals, due to space restrictions in the center. “I just look forward to seeing the art, seeing the people,” said Cheryl Shippey. She and her husband recently moved to Gainesville and wanted to check out the event. Ethel Cooper also came with her husband, William Cooper. The Coopers run a Niverplast North American office in Gainesville, and were looking for some art.
“We are hoping to get some artwork for the office,” Ethel said. “We are thrilled to be here.”
Featured guest of honor Roseta Santiago sold off one of her pieces, “Redemption,” before the cocktail reception ended. About 83 author artists contributed their works to the gala’s lineup. She is “one of the most celebrated contemporary Southwestern artists” and was chosen for this reason amongst others.
“Roseta was selected because she embodies what the Quinlan is all about,” McClure said. “She is both an art teacher and an exhibitor. Those are the two things we do here. We have instructional workshops and classes and we also have exhibitions.”
The Santa Fe, N.M., resident is known for her large background murals, still life pieces created from artifacts and realistic portraits of Southwestern people. She’s also an entrepreneur, recently launching her website, ARTtalk.us, which helps artists market their work online for free. “She’s one of the most successful exhibitors that we’ve ever had,” McClure said. Santiago has shown off her works in other collections in the United States, including The MASTERS of the American West Invitational show in Los Angeles. THE MAGICIAN’S HAT
Book Title: "The Magician's Hat"
Author: Malcolm Mitchell
Art Work: Dennis Campay
Genre: Children/ ages 4-10 years
Publication date: August 15, 2015
Synopsis: David, the magician, loves to perform magic but his favorite trick is not pulling a rabbit out of a hat or finding quarters behind the ears of children. Instead, David knows the magical power of books. One by one he pulls a book out of his hat for the kids and shows them that through reading, anything is possible. If you can read, you can explore your dreams, develop your creativity and achieve your goals.
Malcolm’s Inspiration:
"The Magician's Hat" is the bridge that connects my dreams with reality. I wrote this children's book hoping to be more than just another athlete; to find opportunity in life that goes well beyond my athletic years. My journey started after I was injured playing football and I found myself in a dark corner of my room, where a piece of my dreams vanished. Through determination and a will to give back, now another piece of me thrives in the eyes of many. Through this process, I feel more closely connected to our youth, and helping them prepare for the future has become my motivation for such projects. I wrote this book to show kids that there are opportunities in life beyond athletics; that it takes more than being physically skilled to thrive. Through reading you can become whatever your heart desires. Mostly, it is to let them know that someone is there for them. This book is my chance to be much more than I imagined. A chance to be not a product of my environment, but a product of education.
Malcolm Mitchell, is a native of Valdosta, Georgia. During his freshman year in college, Malcolm developed a love for reading. Initially, reading was a challenge; however, through perseverance, books became an avenue for expanding his curiosity, creativity and learning. Today, Malcolm is an avid reader, active member of a book club, and reading mentor to elementary school students. His inspirational story, which won the College Sports Media Awards’ Outstanding Special Feature, has been featured nationally on the CBS Evening News, ESPN, and USA Today, and has been used by many schools as encouragement for students to embrace the importance of reading. Malcolm can be found in elementary school classrooms reading to children and inspiring others to #ReadWithMalcolm.

Longstreet Portraits Now on View at Quinlan 2015 GALA Fine Art Auction
(Gainesville, GA) The Quinlan’s 37th Annual GALA Fine Art Auction exhibition will be open to the public one week only Friday, February 27 to Friday March 6, 2015.
Portraits of General Longstreet and his widow by renowned portrait artist Connie Lynn Reilly are currently on view. Atlanta native, Reilly is featured in numerous private, public and museum collections and published in national and international publications. She has a special love for the portrayal of the War between the States/Civil War, Revolutionary War and Wstern Pioneer Settlement periods. She is grateful for their contributions and struggles and feels her work will help others to hold their sacrifices in memory.
On the two portraits, the Executive Director of the Northeast Georgia History Center states:
“James Longstreet was one of Gainesville’s most well known and most controversial citizens. After the Civil War, Longstreet was a proponent of reconciliation and joined the Republican Party. He was also appointed to several government posts by his old friend President Ulysses Grant.
In writing his memoirs Longstreet committed an “unforgivable sin” by blaming General Robert E. Lee for the Confederacy’s loss at Gettysburg. These actions and associations damaged Longstreet’s reputation among many fellow southerners, and he was not a very popular person when he moved to Gainesville in 1875.
Before his death in 1904, Longstreet had several business ventures including a 60 acre farm just outside town and ownership of the Piedmont Hotel. Among the hotel’s frequent guests was future President Woodrow Wilson.
After the passing of his first wife in 1889, Longstreet married Brenau graduate Helen Dortsch, 42 years his junior, in 1897. In 1943, at the age of 80, Mrs. Longstreet answered her country’s call during World War II and worked as a riveter in the Bell Bomber Factory in Marietta, Georgia, which produced 668 B-29 Bombers. Mrs. Longstreet passed away in Gainesville in 1963 at the age of 99, having outlived her husband by 58 years.
These two portraits represent this remarkable couple at crucial times in their lives: Longstreet as the brave general in war-worn uniform; his wife Helen widowed without children at the age of 41.
They would make a wonderful addition to any private collection, or an exceptional donation to the Piedmont Hotel, a museum dedicated to Longstreet’s history and legacy, as a part of the collection of the Longstreet Society, a non-profit dedicated to celebrating and studying the life of this most famous citizen of Gainesville.”

YOUTH ART MONTH 2015
Youth Art Month is a nationally celebrated event. Festivities take place traditionally each March, to celebrate visual arts for grades K – 12. The Youth Art Month Program emphasizes the value of art education for all children, encourages support for quality school art programs, and promotes art material safety.
Youth Art Month also provides a forum for recognizing skills developed through visual arts experiences that are not possible in other curriculum subjects.
Over the last eleven years, Youth Art Month in Gainesville has been particularly important because of the legacy of Charles J. Thurmond and the Kiwanis Club of Gainesville.
Thurmond was a member of the Georgia Legislature, the Gainesville City Council and served in many other capacities including as a Trustee of and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Brenau University – the Thurmond-McRae Lecture Hall is named in his honor. He served as a Kiwanian for over 60 years. During that time he served as President, Lieutenant Governor and Governor of the Georgia District.
A great Kiwanian and Gainesvillian, Charles J. Thurmond… created a way to “improve the world one child at a time, one community at a time….”
The Kiwanis club of Gainesville through the Charles J. Thurmond Youth Art Scholarship Awards has provided college scholarships totaling $165,000 to 76 students. Awards were made recognizing excellence in the following categories:
• Visual arts
• Performing arts
• Writing
The Best in show prize in each category is $2500 each year. First place winners from each grade also have the opportunity to compete at the State Youth Art Month competition where more cash awards are possible.
Kiwanis partners with the Quinlan Visual Arts Center each year in order to showcase the visual arts component of the competition in a professional gallery setting. The Quinlan donates the gallery space each spring exclusively for the display of youth art entries from grades K-12. Exhibition Dates: March 20 – April 11th. Opening reception and awards ceremony will be held at the Quinlan Friday, March 20th, 5:30 – 7:00 P.M.
Eligibility- Entries each year are accepted through the art department of local schools. All local Gainesville and Hall County elementary, middle and high schools will be invited to submit their best artwork. Ribbons are awarded, cash awards from the scholarship competition for grades 10-12.
