YOUTH ART MONTH
OPENING RECEPTION, FRIDAY, MARCH 15, 5:30-7PM
EXHIBITION DATES: MARCH 15 - APRIL 13

The Kiwanis Club of Gainesville is pleased to announce the 9th Annual Charles J. Thurmond Youth Art Scholarship Awards.

The scholarships and the event have been named to honor an outstanding Gainesvillian and Kiwanian, Charles J. Thurmond.  In his honor, and in memory of their true friendship, another Gainesvillian, who wishes to remain anonymous, has made a significant contribution to our Club in an effort to recognize the artistic accomplishments of our youth.

Please read carefully through this announcement for other changes in the 2013 contest. All of this information will be available on the Kiwanis Club of Gainesville web site:  www.gainesvillekiwanis.org

The Charles J. Thurmond Youth Art Scholarship Awards provides scholarships to the top three places in the Performing, Visual and Writing Arts.  The Kiwanis Club of Gainesville will present the following scholarship awards for the Best of Show in the Performing, Visual and Writing Arts:

                                                            1st place           $2,500

                                                            2nd place          $1,500

                                                            3rd place           $1,000

The scholarships will be awarded in the same manner as the Kiwanis District Scholarship Awards.  Upon the student’s enrollment to college, he/she will notify the Kiwanis Club of Gainesville, and a check will be sent directly to the school.

The scholarship winners in the Performing, Visual and Writing Arts will be honored at the Kiwanis Club of Gainesville Awards Luncheon, scheduled for noon on May 7th at the Elk’s Club.  During the luncheon, the winning artists, “Best of Show” from the Visual Arts Showcase will display their artwork, and the scholarship winners from the Performing Arts Showcase perform their pieces and the scholarship winners from the Writing Showcase will read their works.  The instructors and parents of the scholarship winners are invited to the luncheon.

For all of you who have previously been involved in these Kiwanis contests, your role as educators and supporters of the events have been outstanding.  It is because of your support and the success of our past collective efforts, that the Kiwanis Club of Gainesville has been presented the opportunity to establish the Youth Arts Scholarship Awards in memory of Mr. Thurmond.

Enclosed you will find an announcement, including contest rules, timeline of events, applications, etc. for each of these events.  We have attempted to reach the appropriate educators and instructors at each of the local school and home school organizations with this mailing.  However, please feel free to forward this information to anyone else at your school/organization that would share in this interest.  Please note that this contest is limited to Hall County.

Thank you for supporting these events and encouraging your students to participate! Thank you to our sponsors Tommy and Chantal Bagwell for their continued support.
