Juror’s Statement:
I have always had a deep affection and appreciation for things made by hand. I respect the transformative power of making. I make. I enjoy being around others that make. I enjoy interacting with things made by others. It brings me immense joy to drink my daily coffee out of a beautiful cup whose maker I know well and interact with daily.
I am always flattered when the invitation to curate, jury, or judge an exhibition is extended. Although it is usually a daunting task, I find the experience enjoyable, insightful and rewarding. In this endeavor specifically, I enjoyed seeing the diversity of approaches to making. Spending time immersing myself in the works was such a treat.
When selecting pieces of merit, first and foremost, I looked for quality in craftsmanship, technique, and execution. Beyond that, I look for works that are engaging or that stand out for one reason or another; a unique or unusual approach to a specific technique, humor, joy, curiosity. I also know that art is subjective. I bring my own set of opinions and biases to the table when making selections.
Indeed, I do consider this exhibition to be made up of works that are both strong and insightful. It has been both an honor and a pleasure selecting the awards.
