Alan Young

Beginning Drawing: Wildlife, Animals, Nature's Elements

(2) Saturdays: 10:15 AM - 4 PM
Feb. 8 & 15

$200 members
$225 non-members

ALL LEVELS
Ages 15+
A variety of techniques and principles are explored in this drawing class designed for beginners. It goes beyond basic sketching and will delve into the world of realism. Students will have their choice of material for their final project, which includes subject matters they bring to class. Any dense and/or multi-textured elements, such as seashells, family pets or trees are perfectly acceptable. Students are asked that all reference work brought to class be in hard copy (no computer screens) and it is recommended that they are at least 8 ½ x 11 in size. From this, students will have a better understanding of anatomy and facial perspective.

Stage One begins with a basic elemental outline. This is followed by using pen and ink for contrast, detail, and texture.

Stage Two adds value scales as it relates to light principles. This will be the primary focus of the remainder of the class. All aspects of lighting, highlighting, shadowing and shading are dissected and practiced. These universal principles can be transferred to other media. Later, students have the option at trying their had at an “absolute” negative; white or light subject matter against a solid black background. This extreme yet simple illustration further demonstrates the beauty of light play and light sourcing.

NOTE: This is a non-competition class and any skill level is welcome.

Artist Bio

Picture
Wildlife Artist, Alan R. Young is well established throughout the South for his Birds of the Appalachian paintings. His technique, watercolor in drybrush, differs from traditional watercolor, allowing for increased detail and contrast. Many who view his paintings for the first time often mistake the work for photography.

Among his many followers and collectors, his “split study” portraits of both the Great Horned Owl and Barred Owl (circa, 2018) continue to receive tremendous accolades. In total, Alan has over 50 Fine Arts awards in various competitions. In addition, Alan was instrumental in creating two successful Art Shows; (a) North Georgia Wildlife Arts Festival n/k/a Blue Ridge Arts in the Park Fall Festival, and (b) Sautee-Nacoochee Festival of Arts n/k/a Winterfest.

His work also resides in corporate collections, including Coca-Cola, Georgia Power and TBS. He remains the only Artist to be featured at Calloway Gardens Festival in Lights for three consecutive years.

2019 also marks the Twentieth Anniversary of his teaching of “Pen and Ink Drawing” classes at the prestigious John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina. Apart from the school, Alan is always available to discuss individual and group classes, fees and travel included – anywhere within a 300-mile radius is open.
